This Ramadan was my second time attending the Annual Youth Qiyam at MCA. It is always a treat to listen to Imam Suhaib Webb, Zaid Shakir and Alaedin El-Bakri. They are knowledgeable, distinguished in their fields and contemporary in approach.
The question of the Park 51 mosque controversy was brought up and of course there was some criticism of American Muslims who seem to have taken a back seat and are busy attending lavish Iftaars and preparing for Eid while their first amendment right is being eroded.
All three of them agreed that Muslims should be blogging, writing op-eds and sending letters to local newspapers and making sure that they actively engage people that attack Muslims with negative comments on news websites and blogs.
I tried to get a message across to the moderator that MCA Youth already has an established blog and we are in desperate need of bloggers but it never made it.
Youth committee at MCA has created the blog with only one purpose; to engage the youth and enhance their knowledge as well as the thought process. We invite people of all ages to blog and speak their mind. There is a resource available and it should be utilized.
All in all the Qiyam was very inspiring and I gained knowledge and InshAllah plan to use it in the most beneficial way.
