Melissa Huckaby Guilty But Wait…

Melissa Huckaby of Tracy, CA was accused of kidnapping, raping and killing a 8 year-old girl named Sandra Canutu. After killing the girl, she stuffed her into a suitcase which was then thrown into a pond and was found 10 days later.

Here is the kicker… Huckaby pled guilty to the murder on May 10, 2010, which means she will now be spared from a possible death sentence. There were other charges but all the charges were dropped. On June 14, 2010, Huckaby will face a sentence of from 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

That’s it?

What does a person really have to do to get a death penalty? What if she were Black or Hispanic? What if she were a man? It doesn’t make sense that you can commit such a heinous crime and get away with it. How can this be justice? For a clear and cut case like this, how can prosecutors drop the death penalty?

She will now go to prison and will have visitation rights to see her daughter who is the same age as the girl she raped and killed. How can something like this be a closure for Sandra Cantu’s family?

This is not justice….
