Islam’s First Ever Female Mosque Designer

A mosque in the religion of Islam is pretty much similar to a Church in Christianity and Synagogue in Judaism. Most Mosques in Muslim countries have 5-Daily prayers and have a resident Imam (preacher).

There are quite a few thousand mosques in the World and all of the mosques have been built or designed by men. A mosque in Istanbul, Turkey, is now an exception because it has been designed by a woman.

Zeynep Fadillioglu, who has been designing hotels and bars was given the assignment to design this wonderful mosque. Culturally that is a big shift, but there is nothing in Islam that dictates a man should be the one to design a mosque. Keep in mind, these mosques are not limited to men only, women also attend daily prayers in large numbers.

I think the mosque has a contemporary design from inside, specially the mimber (egg shaped, blue colored). The Arabic calligraphy blends in with the design and beautifies the whole experience inside the mosque. Outside of the mosque doesn’t look much different, in fact I think it has been inspired by Faisal Mosque in Islamabad.

How beautiful! And it’s great to see the acceptance of a female designer in Islam. I hope to see females continue to become more valued in the eyes of Muslim culture.

I love it! It's kind of like a modern Hagia Sofia or Blue Mosque. The Kaba door is really neat, and it kind of even looks like Epcot Center. I think it will be very memorable in the future of architecture. She seems really smart.
