4th Annual Urdu Culture Show at UC Berkeley

After the success of last year’s Urdu Cultural show, Pakistani Student Association at University of California, Berkeley have organized yet another show this year.

Urdu is a language that is spoken by approximately 60 – 80 million speakers in five nations worldwide. Additionally, Urdu is spoken by millions in both India and Pakistan, two nations that face much tension with one another especially in current times. This event will help to bring together the Pakistani and Indian communities on campus and as well as those from the greater Bay Area in an enjoyable and open event that will help to alleviate those tensions and foster a setting for cultural change and tolerance.

Urdu Culture Show UC Berkeley

Urdu Culture show is a celebration of the Urdu language in the form of traditional dances, folk music, skits, poetic recitations, delicious ethnic cuisine, and lively speeches. This show is primarily organized and presented by UC Berkeley students but this year they have a participant from SFSU.

This year’s theme is “Khekeshaan” which simply means “The Universe of Urdu.” Translation in English will be provided for every performance for all non-Urdu speakers. I was little skeptical when this same thing was claimed last year but I experienced it myself that you don’t really need to understand Urdu to appreciate the performances.
