SFSU [x]Press Needs to Wake-Up!

SFSU [x]Press is a student run weekly newspaper that primarily deals with the stories and issues that deal with San Francisco State University. On February 11, 2009, an incident took place on SFSU campus and there literally was no coverage about it. Instead, so called journalism majors who run SFSU [x]Press decided to talk about the San Francisco pillow fight in coming days…

This act of objectivity, or lack of, makes me wonder if [x]Press is really a newspaper worth reading or something to be used as a doormat. Let me get straight to the point and tell you about the story that [x]Press decided to shun.

On February 11, 2009, College Republicans at SFSU decided to hold an “Anti-Hamas” rally. The SFSU College Republicans have a history of preaching hate on campus. They got a slap on the wrist last year for a similar rally in which they stood on a flag that said “Allah” on it.

What happened last time happened again this time around, they stood on top of Hamas flag that said “There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” in Arabic. When protesters began surrounding the College Republicans, SFSU police pushed them away at first and after a while made two arrests.

Everything was caught on tape, here is the video:

The video was filmed by College Republicans, it is funny they would tell the whole world in their own footage how ridiculous they are.

There is nothing more to add, this happens at SFSU campus almost every year and no one has any objections. It has become a norm for College Republicans to stand on sacred religious scripture and get away with it in the name of “freedom of speech.”

You have seen the American flag burning, you have seen the Israeli flag burning but I challenge you to show me if there was ever a Bible or Torah burning ceremony. I stand for “freedom of speech” but “hate speech” is not exactly an exercise of any rights and that is why it is called hate speech.

Let’s talk about [x]Press now… if by not reporting important issues that confront the society at large they are trying to sell newspaper advertisement and their goal is to only be a means for journalism majors to write politically correct verbiage, they should really shut their doors and start “National Enquirer” type publication. They might be able to sell more advertising!

I posted a comment on the story “Rally ends in a meltdown” explaining what the College Republicans were standing on and they didn’t even bother to approve it. Is this political correctness or a desire to be plain ignorant?

I lived in SF for awhile and visit frequently. It is not just the student newspapers who don’t cover anything important that happens, it is also the chronicle and they are about to go out of business soon because of it. I think student newspapers in general avoid controversial issues since they don’t understand what journalism is all about.

Hi, I’m on the [X]Press and that was of great topic in a weekly conversation we have about every issue of ours. It was a mistake we didn’t put that incredibly newsworthy event on our front page, but we did break the news on our website as it occurred and updated it as information came in. We covered it, but yes, we could cover more. I don’t think it’s fair to say we don’t cover important issues because we do try hard to bring up issues relatable to the SF State community. At every event on campus, we are there. But I do want to take this post into consideration and inform the rest of the paper that maybe we need to up our ante, myself included.

@Amanda I am not in any way trying to attack anyone personally at xpress, if that was my intention I would have mentioned names.

But I am sure you agree with me that the story should have been covered in a better way then the way it was covered. I see that you are willing to put in effort and work on the story little more because a repeated incident shouldn’t be considered a remote possibility.

    Thanks, I appreciate your repsonse!

@Miami King A post on SF Chronicle is currently in my draft… we both seem to be on the same page :)
