Just before the Ramadan starts, CAIR wants to divert some attention to it… but the problem is, this time it has nothing to do with Islam.
There is a movie coming out on September 12th, 2008 titled “Towelhead”. The movie is about a young Arab-American girl who struggles with her sexual obsession, a bigoted Army reservist and her strict father during the Gulf War. It is based on Alicia Erian’s novel “Towelhead”.
CAIR is usually right on issues but sometimes when it is not, it tries to be pain staking politically correct. Here is what CAIR’s Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said in a letter to Warner Bros Chairman and CEO Barry M. Meyer:
“The title… is of great concern to us, since the word is commonly used in a derogatory manner against people of the Muslim faith or Arab origin… We have no desire to inhibit the creative process or your right to produce any film you wish. However, I ask you to take the above concerns into consideration and examine the social implications of releasing the film under its current title, ‘Towelhead.’”
CAIR is functioning to represent Muslims; it is only representing Arabs in this matter because the movie has nothing to do with Muslims, just Arabs. I really hate it when something like this happens because if you are in existence to just defend Arabs then say it, make it clear! Don’t jeopardize the bigger population just to appease a few.
“Towelhead” is a word used by some in the pop culture to refer to a Muslim girl in Hijab, the girl in this movie doesn’t wear a Hijab or the head scarf. So once again, how does this movie offend an average Muslim walking down the street? It obviously doesn’t but CAIR begs to differ.
