I just read “Bhutto’s Persona Raises Distrust, as Well as Hope” story on NYT’s website and it is something that I have been wanting to read but was so shocked that no one was talking about Benazir’s past while people where busy jumping on the Bhutto band wagon who offers nothing new to Pakistani politics.
Things You Didn’t Know about Benazir Bhutto:
- Stands up to Musharraf but at the same time is interested in forming an alliance with him if he shares power with her.
- On going corruption cases against her in Switzerland, Spain and Britain.
- Calls herself chairperson for life of the Pakistan Peoples Party by stepping on the Party’s democratic ideals.
- As the Prime Minister dished out favors to constituents and colleagues.
- Failed to congratulate Mr. Ahsan, lawyer who won the case to reinstate the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, eventhough she is a frequent emailer to Mr. Ahsan’s wife and was defended by Mr. Ahsan during her 1990s corruption charges.
Some direct quotes about her from people who know her personally:
“She believes she is the chosen one, that she is the daughter of Bhutto and everything else is secondary,”
-Feisal Naqvi, a corporate lawyer in Lahore
“I see her as a vulnerable, hurt person. She’s a chilly, imperial person. She’s firm.”
-Ms. Hussain, former Pakistani ambassador to Washington
Instead of standing trial in Pakistan, Benazir has always avoided Pakistani courts and remained in exile spending the billions of dollars she stole from the people of Pakistan. You can see where that money went if you visited one of her mansions and properties in Dubai. She brings no hope and is a total “No Show”. Pakistan needs someone who doesn’t preach democracy but also practices it.
