ASI Condemns College Republicans

This story is little old but I didn’t get time to talk about it, I had previously talked about the flag stomping incident at SFSU Malcolm X plaza where the College Republicans had organized an anti-terrorism rally. In a nutshell, they were angry at Hezbollah and Hamas and were stomping their flags. What they didn’t know, atleast that’s what they say now, was that those flags had the name of God on them, Allah.

Lot of student clubs felt offended, specially the MSA and GUPS. This prompted an investigation into what really happened at the rally. The result was that “Associated Students board unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the student group for purposely stomping on flags containing the Arabic symbol for God.” (xpress)

The story about this condemnation in the [X]press also lays out the punishment that College Republicans might face after the due process and further consideration on this issue. They might lose funding from the University and might have other sanctions imposed. College Republicans have made it very clear that they will take “legal action against the university if sanctions are imposed.” (xpress)

Now here is my problem, suspending their funding or any other sanctions are not appropriate and send out a different message. Blogosphere has been talking about this issue and they all are united in saying that SFSU is Pro Hezbollah and Hamas. I mean, give me a break, this ain’t about endorsing Hezbollah or Hamas, this is about stomping on a hand-made flag that had the name of God on it. This is not a Muslim issue, I have mentioned it before that the GUPS members you see in the pictures taken that day when they approached the stage are Christians. They were voicing their concerns because they had knowledge about the fact that Hamas and Hezbollah flags have Allah written on it.

My solution, educate College Republicans, give them free enrollment vouchers for a course dealing with “that part of the world,” something like Middle East 101.

Then there is the slippery slope known as “First Amendment” or “Free-Speech.” We all know what free speech is but we don’t really know about what responsible free speech is. Instead of stomping on Hezbollah and Hamas flags with God’s name on it, I would stomp on a poster with the leader of Hezbollah’s face, Nasrallah. At least that is not like stomping on God, is it? If you want to be really vivid about your views, you stomp on a poster or a flag that has the word Hezbollah written on it. More people know of Hezbollah by their name then by their leader’s face or their flag.

yup ur right…i think freedom of speech is very different from being offensive. To add to that, this is a university level club we’re dealing with and especially if those flags were hand made, its really stupid that this club “overlooked” it…i dunno but organizing something like this takes a little brains…

Ok, so then by that logic you would never step on a nazi flag because the swastika is a holy symbol in hinduism. You would also never DARE to step on a Ku Klux Klan flag because it contains a cross…… Oh wait, you’re an idiot. It’s the context in which the symbol appears, in this case on the flag of a terrorist organization, and not the symbol itself. Also of note, two of the same members of ASI who found them guilty in this resolution will also be on the panel that is giving them their “fair trial.” Due process my ass, you can’t declare someone guilty and then hear the case anyway.
You suck, your blog sucks, and it is YOU who needs education vouchers for “living in the real world 101.”

dude i think u missed the whole point on their argument: the college republicans are now stating that they DIDN’T KNOW THAT THOSE FLAGS HAD THE NAME OF GOD…and this is when it becomes stupid to hold a rally without proper knowledge! comon this is university we’re talking abt and anyone would expect organizers to look into such things and if you can’t, then therez no point of rallies like this one cuz it just shows how ignorant u r..get it??? I suggest u go and read this case over again….

First of all, let me tell you the difference between a name of GOD and a holy symbol. Name of GOD is universal and holy symbols are specific. Anyone who can read or can recognize a name of GOD would be offended if they see people stomping over its name. That’s the issue here, don’t blow things out of proportion.

Nazis and KKK are racist organizations, Hezbollah has 7 seats in Lebanese Govt and Hamas is a political party that was just elected (democratically) by the Palestinian people and has the majority in the Govt. Unlike your president who was elected by the supreme court!

Republicans are known to be bible thumping christians and very connected with GOD, I think you are more inclining towards party politics rather than looking at the real issue here.

Hezbollah and Hamas are terrorist organizations. Just because they were elected doesn’t make them any different than what they were before.

And the next time I see one of those flags I hope it is through a thermal camera on my Kiowa.

I know they are designated as terrorist organizations. But what happened on campus was a reflection of what the college republicans didn’t know about these organizations. Just because these groups happen to be terrorist organizations doesn’t mean you don’t investigate more about them.

I brought the Hamas and Hezbollah up because they have much more standing in middle east then they do here and knowing that would have resulted in a better organization of the events that took place that day.

Remember the issue here once again, college republicans claim they didn’t know that those words on the flag meant God. Investigating a little more about these two organizations might have saved them the ordeal they face now. That’s all I was trying to say. Not conding what hamas and hezbollah has done in the past.
